Know The RSS Basics

RSS may mean three different things. The original RSS (RDF Site Summary RSS 0.9) was developed by Dan Libby for Netscape. After a couple of months, they produced a simpler and easier-to-use version called Rich Site Summary or RSS 0.91. But they later lost interest, leaving it without an owner. As more and more users were using RSS, Winer made an adapted version of RSS 0.91 for Userland, claiming it as his own. Later in 2005, Microsoft developed Really Simple Syndication in relation to its Simple Sharing Extensions.

An RSS is a means of publicizing updates from blogs or websites. It may or may not include photos and summary of the latest posting. A RSS that provides summaries (thus Rich Site Summary) allow users to skim through the article and then decide if they want to access the website source at a later time. The RSS feed usually contains the title of the update originating from the website along with the link.

The benefits of RSS are:
RSS provides benefits to both web publishers and readers (users).

4. Publishers cannot determine how many users are subscribed to their feed and the frequency of their visits. Moreover, they would not know the reasons why users unsubscribe which could be important in improving their advertising.

5. RSS feeds create higher traffic and demands on the server.
Most readers still prefer the whole update over a brief summary of the entry.

6. Since it is a new technology, many sites still do not support RSS.

How do I start using RSS?
There are two things needed: a RSS feed and a RSS reader or aggregator. The RSS feed comes from an RSS-supported website. There are websites that provide a list of RSS feeds of different websites. An RSS aggregator is used to read the RSS feed from the source website. It scans and collects data on the latest RSS feeds from the Internet.

An aggregator comes in two forms: a downloadable program also known as desktop aggregator and an online or web-based aggregator. Downloadable aggregators may require payment before they can be acquired, while internet-based aggregators are usually free of charge. All you have to do is register an account and you are ready to use their services. Both versions allow you to customize or choose which RSS feeds to enter. Paid aggregators are usually chosen by more experienced users and usually allow more freedom in customizing feeds.

Keyword Density

The number of times a selected keyword appears on a web page is called keyword density. Be mindful not to over use keywords, they should be used just enough to appear as if the page is not being stuffed.

Your site will probably be rejected as a spam or an artificial site if your keywords are repeated with every other word on every line.

Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page.

Keyword density example: Your webpage has 100 words on it (not including HTML code) and a certain keyword is used 10 times in the content. To find the keyword density on that page, divide the total number of keywords by the total number of words on your web page. So 10 divided by 100 = .10 and then 100 multiplied by 0.10 =10%. Remember keyword density is expressed as a percentage.

To be recognized by the search engines you should have a keyword density between 3% and 5%. It is also recommended to not exceed this amount.

This Keyword density rule applies to every page on your site and to not just one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different service or product.

How to find your keyword density.

Using a word-processing software like Word Perfect or Word, copy and paste the content from an individual web page into the software of your choice.

Find the 'Edit' menu and click 'Select All'. Now go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Word Count'. Record the total number of words on the page.

Go back to the 'Edit' menu and click the 'Find' function. Select the 'Replace' tab and type in the keyword you want to find. 'Replace' that word with the same word, so you don't change the text.

When you complete the find and replace function, you will be provided a count of the words you replaced which represents the number of times your keyword is on that page.

Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density. Can you find the keyword density of this article?
